A real estate investment trust is a publicly traded company that owns, operates or finances income-producing properties. Investing in real estate indirectly is done by way of an actual estate funding trust , an organization that holds a portfolio of income-producing real estate. There are a number of forms of REITs, including fairness, mortgage, and hybrid REITs, and are classified based on how their shares are purchased and bought, similar to publicly-traded REITs, public non-traded REITs, and private REITs.
