However, the main story here is about the late Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington’s Georgia estate, which has sold for about $6.58 million.

The property, known as Free Bird’s Nest, was originally offered in its entirety for $12 million at the end of 2023, but it only attracted offers from developers looking to subdivide the land.

The Estate’s History

Gary Rossington and his wife, Dale Krantz-Rossington, began assembling the estate in 1997, buying a 7-acre parcel that included the existing main house for about $1 million. They ended up buying nine lots to create their estate.

The property’s main house stands on the half of the estate that just sold, built in 1990, the traditional-style home spans about 7,500 square feet across three levels, with five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms.

It also has a pool area, added by the Rossingtons, and a lower-level entertainment space, complete with a wet bar, a games and billiards area, and Rossington’s music studio.

The Sale

Holding out for the right buyers paid off for Krantz-Rossington, as the first portion of the estate, about 32 acres, sold last December for $4.7 million to a family who plan to build their own home on the land.

Now, the remaining 36 acres have a new owner who was drawn to the acreage, privacy, and its lake, Sargent Lake, according to Cynthia Chandlee of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty.

Chandlee represented Krantz-Rossington in the deal, which closed Monday, and said, “[Dale] wasn’t about the money, she was the steward of the land, and she wanted to make sure it went into the right hands.”

The Property’s Features

A suite above the two-car garage and a separate ranch-style house provide additional accommodations, and the spring- and creek-fed Sargent Lake sits in the middle of the now two separate properties.

There are two docks there—a covered one with two slips and a floating one—and plenty of fish to be caught, making it an attractive feature for outdoor enthusiasts.

Given the property’s size and features, it’s a rare find in Milton, as much of its farms and other large tracts have been sold off to developers over the years, according to Chandlee.

She said, “We really did save it,” referring to the estate’s preservation from being subdivided and developed.

It’s likely that the new owners will appreciate the property’s natural beauty and its connection to the music world, as Gary Rossington was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and played with the band until his death in 2023 at age 71.

The new owners will also enjoy the luxury home sales in the area, which have been attracting high-end buyers.
